Maharshi Dayanand University
Maharshi Dayanand University, initially known as Rohtak University, Rohtak, was established by an Act of Legislature of Haryana in 1976 with an objective to promote inter-disciplinary higher education and research in the field of environmental, ecological and life sciences. Initially, it was a unitary and residential University, but in November 1978, it became an affiliating University. Through an amendment in the Act in 1977, it was named after the great revolutionary and social reformer, Maharshi Dayanand and came to be known as Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. The University Grants Commission recognized this University under section 2(f) for the recognition of degrees and under section 12(b) of the University Grants Commission Act for central grants on Feb. 2, 1983.
Distance Education is an established and recognized mode of education which is in consonance with changing socio-economic needs and emerging demands of the knowledge era. Keeping up with the spirit of Open University system and in the view of long-standing demand of heterogeneous groups of student's community, the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak (MDU), has started a wide spectrum of courses. Over the years, DDE has expanded tremendously in terms of programmes, enrolment and study centers. Out of 20 programmes being offered by DDE, 13 are leading to Postgraduate degree, 6 courses for Bachelors degree, 1 course is P.G. Diplomas.
The various programmes offered by the Directorate range from conventional to management and technical as per needs of the area and employment opportunities available in the country. In order to meet the growing demand of computer education, the Directorate with its experience and expertise in both computer and distance learning launched programmes in Computer/IT. These programmes are telescopic in nature wherein a diploma/advanced diploma are awarded after completion of each year of training culminating into a university degree. Moreover, to provide greater choice and flexibility to the students, provision for lateral induction in Computer/IT programmes. The various programs offered at the distance education centers include BBA, BCA, Bsc IT, MBA, MCA, Msc IT, PGDBA, PGDCA, Bsc Biotech, Msc Biotech, BAJM, MAJM.
Keeping in view the dynamically changing requirements of corporate world and to cope with its needs, the Directorate has another innovative and extremely useful Three-Years BBA (Industry Integrated) Programme in the five Specializations. Besides, other courses DDE have Master in Computer Application (MCA), Master in Business Administration courses as well through Distance Mode. Through these 20 programmes, DDE is imparting education to more than 54,000 students through its study centers.
The reasons for the popularity of its programmes have been account of carefully designed curriculum, well planned teaching learning strategies, effective student support system and fair examination and evaluation system. At present, DDE has 417 study centers recognized by the University which are spread in 13 States of the country.
